How Often Should You Use a Face Pack? The Case for Once a Week
Daily face packs, three-times-a-week masks, twelve-step routines. Here’s why your skin is probably asking for less, and how a weekly ritual (timed to the moon, if you like) does more.

There’s a quiet pressure in skincare to do more. More steps, more actives, more masks. If once a week is good, surely three times is better?
Usually, it isn’t.
What a face pack is actually doing
Most face packs, ours included, do some combination of three things:
- Clean deeply: clays like multani mitti absorb oil and lift away grime.
- Gently exfoliate: ingredients like besan, rice powder and orange peel help clear away dull surface cells.
- Soothe and refresh: rose, tulsi and others leave skin calm and comfortable.
All three are good things in moderation. The trouble is that cleaning and exfoliating both remove something from your skin, and your skin needs time to rebuild what it lost.
Your skin barrier, in one paragraph
The outermost layer of your skin works like a brick wall. Skin cells are the bricks; natural oils and fats are the mortar. Together they keep water in and irritants out. Every time you deep-clean or exfoliate, you take a little of that wall down. Given a few days, skin repairs it. Do it again before it’s finished, and the wall gets thinner each time.
Signs you’re overdoing it
- Skin feels tight after washing, even when you moisturise
- Stinging when you apply products that never used to sting
- Redness or patches of flaking
- A strange shiny, almost waxy look, especially on the cheeks
- More breakouts, not fewer, as irritated skin overproduces oil
If any of these sound familiar, the fix is usually to do less for a couple of weeks: a gentle cleanser, a plain moisturiser, sunscreen, nothing else.
Why once a week is the sweet spot
For most skin, a weekly face pack gives you all the benefit with plenty of time to recover in between. It’s also how most traditional Indian routines worked: an ubtan before a festival, a multani mitti pack on a Sunday afternoon. Not every night.
Once a week has another benefit that’s easy to overlook: you’ll actually keep doing it. A ritual that fits your life beats a routine you abandon after ten days.
That’s why every Moon Care box holds six sachets: six weeks of weekly rituals.
Make it a ritual, not a chore
A face pack is one of the few skincare steps that requires you to stop. You can’t really scroll, cook or answer emails with a face full of drying clay. Lean into that.
- Pick a night. Sunday evenings are popular. So is Friday, as a line between the week and the weekend.
- Or follow the moon. The moon changes phase (new, first quarter, full, last quarter) roughly every seven days. It’s the reason we’re called Moon Care: when the moon changes, it’s ritual night. Our homepage shows you when the next one is.
- Set the scene. Light a candle (there’s one in every box). Put on something you like. Leave your phone in the other room.
- Take the full twenty minutes. That’s the part your skin and your head need.
What if my skin is very oily?
Some very oily skin is comfortable with a clay pack twice a week, especially in humid months. Try once a week for a month first. If your skin still feels congested and shows no signs of irritation, add a second session, and watch for the warning signs above.
What if my skin is dry or sensitive?
Once a week, at most. Mix your pack with milk or curd, rinse before it fully dries, and always moisturise afterwards. Patch test anything new.
The short version: once a week, twenty minutes, done properly. Your skin gets time to recover, and you get a small, regular moment that’s just for you.
